Gwyl Macs Festival Saturday - review

djmix2pana.jpg

SUBvert selected Ceri an up and coming photographer to go along to the Gwyl Macs Festival and report back to us. Here’s what he had to say…

DJ

The first thing that caught my attention was these amazing breakdancers from Cardiff busting out some awesome moves in the dance shed.

one handed

The corrugated sides of the building were shaking like mad due to the bass it was totally bonkers. The sound was so loud even though it was the middle of the day there was a real party spirit.

in a spin

The skating was also wicked Pancho was on the mic giving it all the usual top banter and commentary whilst the skaters ripped it up on the mini ramp.

There was some wicked music going down from KIDS IN TRACKSUITS + DJ JAFFA which added to the crazy atmostpehere whilst we watched skaters from VANS, KILLCITY, HOWIES pull of the most insane tricks.

Daedelus was well good he had this huge sample box which he had made himself which was amazing. His performance was totally different, I have never heard anything like it in my life. With the most random samples and strange noises it was mental and to top is off he had this really weird presence on stage. I thought he was definately the best performer of the day in his old skool suit he looked well dapper.

Next I saw Genod Droog, with their eclectic mix of hip-hop, electronic and pop all wrapped up in an uplifting melody. You coulnd’t help by move around to the infectious sounds from these nutty welsh rappers.

Then The Guns took to the stage, Alex Wiltshire the lead singer is completely crazy,
he launched himself around the stage spitting everywhere and throwing his guitar around it was a mental performance. They were so energetic putting everything into and delivering a really memorable performance.

Killa Kela was astounding I was mesmerised watching him. he’s so talented its shocking. As well as being an incredible rapper he is also an immense singer and one of the top beatboxers in the world. He was on stage with another mc who jumped down off the stage and started free styling. He was ripping it out of everyone in the audience especially this ginger haired guy who he started comparing to Mick Hucknell. It was hilarious and really entertaining its incredible how they can just make things up off the top of their heads which are clever and funny at the same time.

Topping off the music for the night was Grooverider looking as cool as ever, the only person who could carry off the white vest look with ease. Throwing down some top drum and bass tunes which the crowd lapped up. Mixing in some europhic sounds with a feel good vibe was definately what was needed to end the night on a high.

I’ve also got to mention the fire crew, a bunch of about 15 guys and girls put on a stunning performance with fire poi juggling and staff. The most worrying fact was how close they were to my car I thought they were having a laugh when they set up right next to the car park, but it was absolutely brilliant.
