I Spoke to Greg one of the organisers of !Resist! and the man behind OrgasmikDesign, to find out a bit more about his interesting career and the amazing projects he’s been involved with.
Angel: Tell me about the first thing that inspired you growing up?
Greg: I’ve had the chance to travel a lot as a child. My father was a journalist so my mother and I kinda followed him to the different places he had to go for work. Thanks to that, I’ve been exposed to different cultures and natural environments (african, european, south american, pacific…) during all my childhood and I think that’s what inspired me as a child. To discover the nature, the animals, the customs of each culture was great, I loved it and wanted to discover more and more about the people.
A: What interested you at high school?
G: As a teenager I discovered the street and urban culture. I found really interesting how people in this culture were turning the rules upside down being in music, in fashion or in the way to appropriate the urban environment. By that time I wasn’t really into visual stuff, of course I loved graffiti or skateboard visuals but I was more into the music. That’s what caught almost all my free time.
A: What came after high school?
After I graduated I wanted to become a sound engineer but unfortunately for me I wasn’t able to enter in a sound school in France ‘cause the system here is stupid. So I signed for a diploma in Canada that was teaching multimedia, video, animation and sound. It made me discover a new culture and a new passion, graphic design. I remember discovering the graphic scene through a website called Surfstation (www.surfstation.lu) back in 1998.
From there I followed the links to different graphic designers and artists and I started to buy books about visual arts and its history. And it made me want to be involved in this scene by creating but also curating stuff related to new forms of visual arts. Since then I never stopped learning about graphic and discovering artists.

A: Ok lets move on to your career, what were you doing before Unchi?
G: While my studies in Canada I started a collective online project called OrgasmikDesign (don’t ask me why :) ). The first concept was to give a theme to 5 different people comming from 5 different creative fields (graphic design, video/animation, photography, music…) and let them interpret it the way they wanted.

Then the project went into another direction : give 1 theme to illustrate to 10 graphic artists from a same country and interview them about their work and the theme. The main goal was to show if there were a specific style for a country and if there were similarities in the way of interpreting a theme. Countries featured on OrgasmikDesign were France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. Beside this project I was freelancing and participating in other artistic projects.
