Funeral For a Friend - Cardiff CIA (Gig Review)

Ceri Davies is a talented graduate photographer/journalist based in Swansea, Wales we asked him to check out Funeral For a Friend at their CIA gig in Cardiff. This is what he had to say.

First on stage were Cardiffs own The New 1920. The indie rock 4 piece proceeded in doing more than enough to warm the young crowd up. Their set was up tempo and frantic in bursts, with an obvious fan base singing away right at the front. The new single ‘Torpedo Libido’ that came out November 11th, went down a treat - resulting in singer Col leaping off stage to get involved with the crowd. Their energetic set ended on a high, setting the bar for what was next.

The energy levels didn’t drop in the slightest when Kids In Glass Houses sprung onto the stage. Lead singer Aled tore around the stage, letting fly with the mic . With the catchy, punk styled vocals, followed some quality riffs from ex Dopamine guitarist Iain. They churn out songs almost made to make you dance. The power pop rockers last few songs had the crowd bouncing for more.

The Blackouts ‘IM A RIOT’ t-shirts seemed to be everywhere i looked, a perfect description of the band that blasted onto the CIA stage. Sean and Gavin shared the vocals, giving 2 powerful outlets of their screaming and melodic sound. They kept a rocking tempo throughout the set, which was laden with hefty drums. Bouncing around the stage they took over, and paid respect to the Welsh music talent that was on show that night. Dedicating their last song to Funeral For A Friend got the crowd ready for more.

Ending a 15 minute plastic bottle fight in the crowd the lights hit the stage and Funeral For A Friend were greeted with a roar of anticipation. They fly into songs off the latest album, Lead singer Matt hits heaviness then mellowness as the crowd sings along. The Welsh alternative rockers hardly take a breath as the guitars mute then roar to ‘Walk Away’ with a dynamic loud chorus. The set is full of driving guitar and some heavy duty drumming courtesy of Ryan Richards. Topping the bill perfectly, they have the whole place transfixed and brimming with Welsh pride. A night of Local music, of the highest quality.
