Anathallo are a group of talented musicians that currently resides in Chicago IL, they’ve been playing together for a little over 6 years. Their beautiful music encompasses a whole range of instruments from bells, pipes and even velcro strips.

We invited llustrator/designer Richard Liptrot to have a listen to their new single ‘Hanasakajijii (A Great Wind More Ash)’ and visually represent the sound, lyrics and emotions within the song.

Richard Liptrot - “I wanted to build up the image with layers of patterns to represent the numerous instruments which build up in Anathallo’s music. I Used stencils and cut out shapes of different materials to produce a mixture of printing effects. This resulted in fluent patterns which I felt reflected the sounds in the music.

This illustration was inspired by the explosion at the beginning of the song. I imagined fireworks exploding in the sky, giving me the idea of splashing paint onto the page. The fiery colours represent my response to the music.

These two illustrations represent the contrast in Anathallo’s music, between the subtle building up of different instruments and the explosive sounds in the song. As if a release of fiery energy.”

Here’s is a bit more information about the band.

“Originally hailing from the contently named Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Anathallo (Greek translating as ‘to renew’ or ‘to make bloom again’) are 6 guys and 1 heavily outnumbered girl offering 7 delicate voices, armed with instruments which stretch out well past the norm. Taking in all manner of brass and wind family members, bells, pipes, Velcro strips and chains, their sound is big, engrossing and delightfully adventurous.

‘Since their 2001 conception Anathallo have come a long way from the bands early, wide-eyed teenage days playing post-punk. A relocation to Chicago and no less than 7 lineup changes has helped them mature into an incredible force, one which has seen them take the US by storm enjoying a huge online buzz, tours with the likes of Brand New, Manchester Orchestra and The New Amsterdams, as well as spots at many of the biggest festivals including New York’s CMJ and Coachella in LA.

Just recently the band had a track picked up to be used on a Vick’s Vapor Rub advert, running hundreds of times across the States with millions of American’s now associating the band’s soothing tones with their dry noses and painless heads!’

‘Hanasakajijii (A Great Wind More Ash)’ is taken from the bands 2007 American-only-released album ‘Floating World’. A new full-length record is set for release in spring 2008, including a limited edition bonus disc containing tracks from the Anathallo back catalogue, previously unavailable outside of the US.”

Release date for the single is 28th January 2008.
