Ghost of a Thousand,Baddies, Reuben ‘twobythree’ EP - (Visual CD Review)

The “twobythree” EP dropped through my door and I put the call out to our posse of up and coming illustrators to see who was brave enough to take on these three intense bands. And here’s the results…
Olivia Ng - “The Ghost of a Thousand “Black Art Number 1″: This song was frantic, which was propelled along by the singing. An image of a bull came into my mind which represented the punch of the lyrics and anger and the anger is illustrated by messy hand drawn lines.”

“Baddies “Battleships”:This song is very catchy an upbeat and made me think of bold loud shapes and colours. The lyric that stood out for me was “all aboard the vain train” which I tried to illustrate. The piece is to try and reflect the lightheartedness of the song.”

“Reuben “Cities on Fire” : I found this song meloncholy, especially the lyric “so play your violin…”. Paired with the theme of the song being about fire I tried to combine the emotion of the song with the theme hence half of the violin represents the mood and it gradually gets darker and more gnarly and angry which represents the fire.”

Animator duo Kyle and Andrew from Chog Zoo “Reuben are masters of their craft. Very few bands have the ability to jump between the quiet and the loud so effortlessly and with ease. These bands have been given the imaginative moniker “Quiet/Loud” bands, and Reuben stand out from the crowd. They lull you into a false sense of security before pulverising you with sheer brutality, only for you to find that you want them to do it again.
This is exactly the case with “Cities On Fire” and it conjures up images of the innocent being victimized by their own nightmares, however deceptively pleasant they may appear to be at first. Bearing this in mind we came up with the following ideas whilst listening to the track. They each depict somebody or something in a situation where they come face to face with something that they fear because of its contrast to their natural environment, for better or worse.
These images go hand in hand with Reuben’s latest single, which at first may seem terrifying, but quickly metamorphosizes into something altogether hauntingly beautiful and poetic.”
