Year Long Disaster - Self Entitled Album (Visual CD Review)

After seeing “Year Long Disaster” support “Velvet Revolver” recently I was so blown away, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on their new album. But who could do this fantastic album justice?
I found just the man, illustrator David Parkinson, after seeing his amazing artwork we thought his style would bring the songs alive and elevate it even further.
David Parkinson - “For all the images I have chosen a unified colour scheme of red and grey. This is because the majority of the songs on the album like to focus in on big riffs. Therefore For all the images there are red parts that stand out these represent the songs main guitar parts and the image usually focuses on them.
“It Ain’t Luck
“It Ain’t Luck” sounds like someone found a lost “Led Zeppelin” tape of unheard recordings. They decided that listening to it had to be done properly. So they found a grey, musty, nicotine stained pub and kitted it out with a huge ensemble of old fuzzy valve amps. When they pressed play the resulting cacophony of riffs, Screeching vocals and hard beats and bass destroyed the room. Objects were flying all over the place even the guys pressing play had to hide behind the bar. Eventually the place collapsed and all that was left in the ruin was the tape lying on top of the rubble with not a mark on it.

The imagery for this review was taken from the song title `Swan On Black Lake’. I have then applied the feeling and flow of the song to the images of swans on a black lake. The clouds and the water are misty with subdued colour. This represents the haunting strings and loose finger picked guitar that quietly starts the song. Half way through the song the strings rise to make way for a hard and loud rock riff. The solid colours and blocky construction of the swans represents this final riff. They sit on top of the lake, distinct and powerful. The same way the big riff plays over the soft strings. The largest swan is wearing a fedora. This is because he loves blues rock riffs.

This song always feels like its pressing forward. The lyric “I’ll be there soon” suggesting a man on his way. The fast blues riffs and driving beats all feel like they are racing to be somewhere I wanted to construct an environment out of the musical elements of this song. The horses in the foreground represent the rolling bass line that kicks in half way through the song. This bass line drags the song forward. It keeps hurtling along as the guitar brakes intro frenetic solo-ing. the guitar is represented by the buildings that seem to fall into each other. Lead singer Daniel David’s guitar folds and loops doing many different things, all at a break neck speed. The buildings represent this as there are many different shapes and constructs collapsing into each other. All the while the bass (horses) thunder on.”
