Teenagersintokyo - Self-Titled EP (Visual CD Review)

The very first time I heard Teenagersintokyo I was totally entranced, the music is so hypnotic you just have to jump around and sing along. But there’s also dark atmospheric undertones, so we invited digital manipulator Leo B to interpret their brand new EP.
Teenagersintokyo “Robocat”
Leo B - “When starting these illustrations for teenagersintokyo my ideas went through a process of the completely obvious to the absolute literal. I had images of electro vampires playing synths and looking moody so I cleared my mind and went back to the music. Teenagersintokyo have a colourful energetic sound which is driven by a dark undercurrent and I wanted my images to reflect this conflict. Each of the pieces uses a lot of colour and on the surface they are bright and out going but underneath each of them has a dark atmosphere.”
Teenagersintokyo “Very Vampyr”
Teenagersintokyo “End It Tonight”

Teenagers in Tokyo are:
Guitar - Sophie McGinn
Vocals - Samantha Lim
Bass - Linda Marigliano
Drums - Rudy Udovich
Keys - Miska Mandic
They aren’t teenagers and their not from Tokyo, they are four girls (plus a guy, he comes later) who met a decade ago on their first day of high school, and formed a band in Grade Seven art class. As a band they did vocal covers of their favourite songs; their first being a cover of Daft punk’s ‘Da Funk’. Miska sang percussion, Sam belted out some random noise, Sophie crooned the synth line and Linda yelled some arbitrary vocals. No one approved.
Eight years later, the girls picked up real instruments and found a boy named Rudy to play drums.
Their self-titled E.P. was produced by Jono Ma from the Lost Valentinos and Knife Machine.

EP Cover by Misky Mandic - “As a band we’re very pdeantic and love to be as involved as we can in every aspect of our music and our image. We sat down to have a brainstorm about what the cover for the Ep could possible be and someone had the idea of using the image of an object to replace the heads of a human being. So I walked away from that and found an image of Sonny and Cher where their bodies looked like the perfect base for a blood and bone monster I visualized exploding from their necks. The interplay or internal/external has always fascinated me. How our boides function, how they’re perceived and how we manipulate them is amazing. And I’m constantly fascinated by how something one person finds beautiful and natural could be absolutely grotesque to someone else. To me the artwork is beautiful, but others have told me they find it really disturbing. I think that’s my favorite thing about it.”
