Exit Calm – Manchester, Night and Day (Gig Review)

South Yorkshire four piece Exit Calm have burst onto the scene with a whole heap of famous musicians like Tom Clarke (The Enemy) Mani (Primal Scream) and Nick Mcabe (The Verve) yelling from the rooftops how great they are. So tonight I was itching to get into Manchester to see if the hype is true.
Just before they appear on stage a crowd appears from out of nowhere, including three members of The Verve (all except Richard Ashcroft) have made it down to support this exciting new band. The first thing the band do is switch off the lights great for creating eerie shadows and setting the scene for their psychedelic sounds.
The atmosphere is charged as the haunting sounds of the electric guitar begins to warble out across the sea of people crammed in front the stage. Even in the dark Nicky Smith delivers a hypnotic performance his raspy vocals reverberating off the walls. I feel like I’m on a roller coaster in the dark, as the pace gradually building in momentum and pitch until it bursts in an ear splitting finale. The highlight of the night is the new single ‘Higher Learning’, beautifully fragile vocals that have a mind altering effect are complemented by the deep gutsy bass that vibrates inside my chest. Exit Calm are definitely going to be huge in 2008 with epic songs full of emotion and passion, delivered with intense energy, you have to see them live to appreciate the richness of their sound.
