Promote Yourself To The Creative Community

SUBvert Magazine is read by some super-creative, talented and ambitious people from a wide variety of disciplines. I spend a lot of time connecting them with each other through email so I figured, why not make the process more efficient and open to more people?

So this page is a place where ambitious creatives like you can shout out what you do. Tell the community who you are, where you’re located, which creative field you are in. Let us know what your unique talent is and tell us the value that people get from your work. Feel free to link to your websites and social media accounts.

I’d also recommend creating yourself a DISQUS account in the comments (only takes a minute) and uploading a picture of yourself. People like to deal with real people, not anonymous names, so it goes a long way to developing your credibility and having people take you seriously.

Look forward to connecting with you.
Paul.

PS. All comments are manually approved by us, so don’t expect them to appear instantly, it usually takes a few hours. And I’ll say it again, when you don’t upload a picture of yourself on things like this, it’s like flushing potential contacts, sales and money down the drain!

OK guys, here's a quick example to get you going, but feel free to use your own format…

    Name: Paul Magee

Location: Based in the UK, but work internationally.

Creative Field: I specialize in marketing strategy, mostly, but not limited to the creative industries.

Unique talent: I don't need your money, so I find myself having the freedom to be particularly honest with people I advise. I've worked with a number of hugely successful products in the fast moving craze industry so I know how to lay the foundations for rapid growth.

The art and science of super successful marketing requires a deep knowledge of psychology and a disciplined approach to testing. I am geeky about both.

Value People Get From My Work: I'm not afraid to look at all aspects of a project which often involves helping creatives break through personal barriers, particularly fear. I also help talented creatives improve their conversion factors, which means turning your talent into traffic then turning that traffic into dollars.

    There are 4 main areas any creative needs to focus on;
    1) Making excellent content. (That's your job)
    Then having your fans…
    2) Remember you.
    3) Talk about you.
    4) Buy from you.

I prefer to work with people who have already mastered number 1. But I can help with the details of 2,3 and 4. And commercial success is all in the details.

Availability: I'm not currently taking on any new clients, but I am working on a series of free videos sharing a lot of what I know about maximizing your conversions and optimizing your online marketing.

  2. whyisbox Says:

Name: Julian James – NewSugar | Whyisbox | Vectorville

Location: Nottingham UK, but work internationally.

Creative Field: I’m an illustrator, graphic designer, art director, trend forecaster, design manager, magazine curator, promoter and web fiend. To shrink the label a little though, I’m a creative.

Unique talent: I have a keen eye for an opportunity and how best to maximise it, either as the single industrious hand behind the project or by connecting mine and others unique talents. I’ve founded many successful creative partnerships over the years.

Although primarily a designer, I come from a marketing/promotions background and this is a fundamental part of my approach to all things. It has to have a point, be unique and have an impact.

Value People Get From My Work: I’m ridiculously experienced and I listen. You’re the client and although I will bring my creative panache to your project, it is still your project. You will get an end product you can be truly excited about, that will have an incredible impact for your business… and, I’m a dead nice guy to work with. The full package!

Availability: I am currently taking on new design/illustration projects and I am also keen to develop further long term creative partnerships with likeminded, driven people.

    Name: Tigz Rice

Location: Based in London, but will work anywhere I'm needed!

Creative Field: I'm a freelance digital illustrator and my work is often described as dark and creepy, sometimes even kinky. I've just done a range of Tees for Diabolus Amor and I self-publish adult picture books in my free time :)

Unique talent: My impressive knowledge of software packages! I have a desire to know everything and thus have taken it upon myself to learn Flash, Dreamweaver, Final Cut, Director, Illustrator Photoshop, Indesign……. you get the picture!

Value People Get From My Work: I like my work to evoke meaning or emotion and so a ot of it is drawn from personal experience, nightmares I had when I was young, that sort of thing. I love weird things so I aim for that in my work, testing boundaries of normality.

4 things most people don't know about me:
    1) My real name (nope, I'm not telling!)

    Nickname: Scout
Location: Seattle (just a bit southeast under the largest and most unstable volcano on the lower 48). Work on a national basis with a variety of recording/performing artists.
Creative Field: 25 year vet of music biz in promotion and marketing. Many seek me out for award campaigns.

Value Of My Work: I listen for what isn't being said, and watch for what others aren't doing…then follow that path. Writing is also a strong suit. I love to get creative with writing such as for ads or copy; but the majority of work I write must be factual without being hype.

Until now, I've interfaced with corporate America on behalf of clients in many situations; mostly involving media. In 2004, working on a large festival that was “crashed” by a presidental campaign appearance. I was asked to interface with the John Kerry PR team which worked out well, when all was said and done.

Have three Grammy Award winning campaigns to me credit.
Have contributed to the legacy of two of history's most popular songs:
Classical Gas the most-broadcast instrumental tune in history and Louie Louie, the most-recorded rock song in history.

Founder of Scout66.com a new platform that fills in where print media is no longer able by soliciting reviews of live music throughout the country. Touring artists make that all important connection when the ticket buying public steps up and writes reviews for what they paid to see. Scout66.com is a secure website and all reviews are archived helping touring artists to approach presenters with information based on what the audience has to say. Once content develops an at-a-glance calendar will develop for each state, by city and by genre. Launching in the fall of 2009.

    Location:
    Stockholm; Sweden.

    Creative Field:
I’m an illustrator and a graphic designer.

    Unique talent:
The style I have developed for my illustration work is my main talent. It's a style that mixes influences of comic book reading, art history studies, Science fiction movie watching, album cover artwork and a whole lot of other stuff into something that is uniquely me.

I'm also very intersted in typography, letterforms and everything graphic design and want to mix up my pictures with my design work.

Value People Get From My Work:
I will always bring my creative ideas, and my style to every project I'm working on but I'll do that with the knowledge that it is your project. The end product is always going to be something that you, the client, want and is satisfied with. Something that gets you excited.

  12. David_LaRocca Says:

    Name: David LaRocca

    Location: Birmingham, AL USA

Creative Field: I am a Fantasy and Horror Illustrator.

Unique talent: I am unsure if this is a curse or a blessing but in many cases a people think my work is a photograph or photo manipulation rather than a painting. When it comes to my horror related pieces it has been said that my work mixes both beauty and terror. I’m not afraid to take people to dark places even though the result is that most people come away with a negative feeling about the image.

Value People Get From My Work: My art is my life and when I put my signature on the piece you can rest assured that much work and thought has gone into it. For more than ten years I have worked in many art-related industries, including Animation, E-Learning, and Video Game Development. 15. mistermeat Says:

    Hi, I'm MisterMeat.

I'm a Designer working in London but am beginning to do more illustration work using design as the base. My work features a lot of logos and the like interspersed with more traditional forms of illustration – the goal being to put design in the same sort of public domain that illustration sits in – I think that the magic of logos are less appreciated outside the industry but that shouldn't be the case!

I was recently featured in the Exposure section of Computer ARTS magazine and would like to start expanding this illustration portfolio and doing more prints and work. I've currently got a few pieces on my website to give a taste of what I do, plus my new illustration, The Big Apple, will be finished soon and I'm hoping to print it asap.

    Name: Matt Williams

    Location: Westcliff-on-Sea, UK

    Creative Field:
BA Sculpture | MA Design & Digital Media

By day I am Creative lead / Head of Online at a creative communications & design agency. I'm responsible for creative output across several disciplines including brand & identity creation, graphic & typographic design and website design & development.

Outside of work I draw and paint and make and do… I'm working towards making this a larger part of my creative output/career…

    Unique talent:
I like to see myself as a bit of a creative maverick and I do create very challenging solutions for clients but my absolute talent is seeing exactly what the client is asking for. I seem to have an innate ability to read between the lines of any brief and then work with the client to find the most engaging creative solution.

Value People Get From My Work:
Because I understand the clients needs and work with them on a project rather than in isolation, the final product tends to far exceed the clients expectations in terms of response and success. I have a tendency to overdeliver & will very often come up with important/exciting creative strategies outside of the original brief… Also, my level of attention to detail and commitment to a job very often imbues the client with a new sense of pride & reinvigoration in their business. Ultimately, people can see the the love & care put into the work I've done for them … they like that!

    Availability:
I'm always available for anything creative and interesting….yes I am! I'm currently planning a scary move from well paid FT employment to supporting 3 kids & a mortgage Freelancing!! My design & creative (commercial) work is so much more succesful with private clients than it is with the company I work for because I get more direct contact with the clients and free rein over the projects … so I need to make the leap. Plus I really want to jemmy in some more time for illustration/art based personal & commission work too!!

I'd spent a long time working for advertising firms of various sizes, most recently with Ogilvy & Mather. After what they call a “reduction in force” in January of 2009 I found myself at a crossroads, and decided to take the rocky uphill climb and start my own small firm.

We're able to provide big insight and direction without the bureaucracy and politics (and price) of a larger agency. We're big on creating media-agnostic creative platforms that inform your marketing across disciplines.

We plant the seeds that grow the trees that make the seeds that grow the trees that hold the swings…

Hi, we are Yellow Car Design.

We moved from England to Canada a year ago (one of us is English, the other is French-Canadian) and decided to start our own studio in a big, unknown city.

Our clients are mainly people from the area who, like us, are starting their own business. However, we have worked internationally with people from various locations, thanks to the internet.

We have a blog in which we talk about stuff we see, stuff we do and stuff we like.

The studio has two cats/mascots (Steve + Bobo) who sometimes are mentioned in the blog and star in diverse photomontages.

  34. markastle Says:

    Name: Mark Astle, Spark Creative

    Location: Birmingham, UK.

Creative field: a little bit of everything. Advertising, graphic design, web design, photography.

So, what do I put next? I trained mainly as a graphic designer, with a bit of advertising and photography thrown in, at what was then Birmingham Poly – now Birmingham City University. Since then (about 16 years ago) I've worked mostly in advertising agencies, learning how to actually do the job. And 6 years ago, I decided to set up on my own. Since then I've branched out into photography and web design, but everything I do is led by commercial experience of what I feel will do the best job for my clients.

In my time I've worked on huge corporate ID projects (Marconi, Manchester Airport Group), lavish brochures for anyone from Bentley and Fortnum and Mason to a sheet metal bashers, advertising campaigns above, below, around and over the line… pretty much every kind of creative project you can think of.

In short, big agency experience without the big agency overheads.

And on the photography side, I've art directed hundreds of shoots, and now I've shot hundreds more. So I can bring an art director's eye to the shoot, meaning my client won't end up with some artful, but ultimately useless shots.

    Availability: Always.

    Hello my name is Hilda
    I live in Pasadena, CA
I am an artist in progress, and I am trying all kinds of medium.First up, sewing, 2nd painting, and 3rd sculpting. Right now I am sewing plushes. I have had my 100% handmade bears sold at an art/gallery store in CA called Nucleus. I sold 3/10 bears total, which is pretty good, but I decided to get my bears back and sell it on my own. Getting money from what I make is nice and all , but most importantly to me is that I want people to like what I make, it really puts a smile to my face knowing that people enjoy my art. Knowing that 3 people who purchased my bear makes me happy because I know they liked it. I know there is many competition in the art world, but I don't let that bring me down, I know and believe one day people will like my art and will bring smiles. So come and follow me on my adventures as an artist. ^___^
